This space is dedicated to those who have nurtured and cared for me when I was a child. I love you all.
Thelma: My mother.
What can I say, you were the constant factor in my growing years – always there, always caring and nurturing. As a single mom you did a GREAT job and I am always thankful that you took hours from your busy schedule to spend quality time with me, interact with me and expose me to new things and places. I will always remember our special trips to the country in the VW bug, the outings to plays and movies and the books that we read. I now follow the example that you set in the raising of my own child. Your Christian walk has made me what I am, and you have always told me, “In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths”.
Uncle Ev: Yes, my uncle. I miss you terribly and now I only have the very fond memories of staying with you and Auntie Pearl in England when I was 3-5 years old while my mother pursued her further studies. You have always been my father figure and growing up, you were always there for me. Photography, trips to the parks and various gardens, and just jokes, jokes and more jokes. A strong man of God whose example I will always follow.

The 4 Crossman girls: Being an only child, life could be lonely. But I will always remember spending the summer holidays with the Crossman family and feeling part of that unit with 4 other girls. The summers were great – raiding the cherry tree and going to VBS. They accepted me as their sister. And even now that we are grown and have our separate lives, when we meet it’s like a grand reunion of sisters. I was granted the gift of 4 sisters.
Samuel: My father. Though we lived in separate households, you still held a special place in my heart when I returned from England. I do have memories of the days that you would pick me up from school or summer days spent at your house. You were proud of me and my growth and I can look back and appreciate this. Today, I see you interact with your granddaughter and the love that is there and I guess to you it brings back memories of my own childhood.
My teachers at Prep School: My educational achievements today are as a result of the great foundation that was laid by the several teachers who I came into contact with throughout the years that I spent at Prep school. It was a small school and there was a lot of love and caring in the atmosphere. Children were definitely loved by the teachers and we were all pushed to succeed in the best way possible both academically, spiritually and physically. Yes the teachers were strict and firm (Ms. Harrison and Ms. Nosworthy) but you knew that they loved you. The educational foundation that I received boded well for me in High School and beyond. My favourite memory of that school is bitter-sweet – it is the afternoon after we finished our Common Entrance Exam (the exam for placement to High School) and we were so happy to be finished but it was also so sad for in a few months time we would leave all that was familiar and loved.
Thank you all, and the many more who formed my Childhood Web.
Great post! I loved reading about the relationship you had with the 4 sisters :) That is so special for you, as an only child, to be able to have that sibling bond with them. And I love how you stated that your teachers were strict and firm, but that you knew you were loved. That is the kind of relationship I had with my first grade students, and they always knew I loved them and truly cared!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds as if you had a wonderful childhood, with many wonderful people in your web. It is wonderful that your parents divorce did not result in losing contact with one of your parents.
ReplyDeleteBeing raised in a Christian home was an important contributor to your development as a wonderful person. You have done a wonderful job on this blog post!!
I love how you described your relationships and sharing memories of places you have gone and special moments. I think its great that you found sisters.
