As I traversed the length and breadth of the Zero to Three website, I came across a section entitled “Free Parent Brochures and Guides”. I opened the link and discovered General Parenting Topics which included the following:
• Everyday Ways to Support Your Baby or Toddler’s Early Learning – this handout could be downloaded in both English and Spanish. It enabled the reader to learn more about how you can support your child’s development from birth to three in the everyday moments you share.
• What We Know About Early Literacy and Language Development – this handout provided information on how early language and literacy skills unfold across the first three years of life.
• Tips for Your Child’s Development Assessment – this handout provided tips on preparing for, and participating fully in, your child’s developmental assessment.
• Healthy Eating Strategies for Young Children – this handout is in both English and Spanish suggested 8 ways that parents can help their baby or toddler develop healthy eating habits in the first three years.
There were also Age-Based Handouts as listed below:
- Healthy Minds: Nurturing Your Child’s Healthy Development
Dealing with the ages: (1) Birth to 2 Months, (2) 2 to 6 Months, (3) 6 to 9 Months, and (4) 9 to 12 Months.
- The Magic of Everyday Moments
Dealing with the ages: (1) Birth to 4 Months, (2) 4 to 6 Months, (3) 6 to 9 Months, and (4) 9 to 12 Months.
- Supporting Your Baby’s Language and Literacy Skills
- Supporting Your Baby’s Thinking Skills
- Supporting Your Baby’s Self-Confidence
- Supporting Your Baby’s Self-Control
- Your Baby's Development
The handouts were also replicated in the (1) 12 to 18 Months, (2) 18 to 24 Months, (3) 24 to 36 Months, and (4) 30 to 36 Months age groups.
The fact that the majority of the handouts were in English and Spanish demonstrated an effort on the part of the Zero to Three administrators to ensure that the resources were available to the Spanish speaking community which would also include a lot of immigrants. Therefore, the issue of equity was being addressed and Spanish-speaking families could access information that would assist in the educational support of their children.
Hi Sheryl,
ReplyDeleteWhat a great website--so full of useful information for parents. I think it would be a good resource to include in our preschool parent booklet.
Thank you and great post!
I also commented about the millions of children who die every year from diseases. We, as early childhood educators, influence children's growth during the most crucial times of their young lives. We need to do all we can to aid them in becoming happy, successful, members of the community.
