Who Am I as a Communicator?

How I see myself as a Communicator and how others see me.

It was self-affirming to know that how I evaluated myself as a communicator was similar to how others evaluated me.  I chose 2 close colleagues to do the evaluation, persons who have known me for different periods of time but with whom I have developed a good friendship.  Both their responses fell within the same groupings.  This made me feel validated in the sense that I was not a fraud when I was around others and the way I tried to communicate was the way that they understood me.

A very interesting insight that I gained this week was my Verbal Aggressive rating.  When I looked at all the groupings I was surprised at the one that I fell in.  I had a perception that I was in another grouping.  Yet, the more that I think about my response in argumentative situations, is the more I realise that the rating is actually true.  It is indeed interesting that sometimes we have perceptions about ourselves which actually may not be true.

Based on the assessments, I am:

  1. People-oriented in my listening style.
  2. An individual who maintains a good balance between respect and consideration for others’ viewpoints, and the ability to argue fairly by attacking the facts of a position rather than the person holding that position.
  3. Situational in terms of my communication anxiety, that is, I feel somewhat concerned about a number of communication contexts, but probably not all.
Interesting food for thought.

  1. Sheryl- It is interesting that our scores were very similiar to yours. It was affirming to see how others evaluated me in regards to their perceptions. I really enjoy reading your posts and input on these topics. Thank you for sharing.

  2. I also rated similarly by those who evaluated me. It's one thing to evaluate yourself but it's totally different when someone else does it. It's so weird to see yourself through the eyes of others.
